THE BUILDING
Palazzo Galvani, which today houses the Museo Civico archeologico di Bologna, dates back to 1336, when work began on the construction of the hospital and church of Santa Maria della Morte at the behest of the Compagnia, or religious society, of the same name. The hospital, which incorporated numerous pre-existing sacred or private structures, was divided into separate sections for men, women and the wounded, as well as having numerous rooms for offices, spices and even an ice-house.

The church was consecrated in 1427 and the entire building successively underwent enlargements and transformations, including a project by Antonio Morandi, known as Il Terribilia, who around the mid-16th century was responsible for the grand portico della Morte which still links Palazzo Galvani to the Archiginnasio.

The entire complex underwent further refurbishment until, between 1798 and 1801, the Confraternità della Morte was suppressed and the church and hospital closed. During the early decades of the 19th century, the interior structure was greatly modified in line with a design by architect Coriolano Monti, with the creation of the large stairway leading to the upper floor overlooking the courtyard.

With the precise intention of using the building as the site for the archaeological museum, two wings were added to the older structure in 1875, the southern and the eastern wings. For the inauguration in 1881, the central courtyard was transformed into a garden, adorned at the centre with a fountain with bronze putto by Stefano Galletti.
