During the first century dC continues the production of gems with portraits, often related, in the iconography, to characters of the imperial family. It is the case of this carnelian with the depiction of a female bust, probably inspired by the portrait of Julia, daughter of Titus, preserved on a aquamarine engraved by Euodos (Paris, Cabinet des Médailles).
The portrait has a complex hairstyle: a great mass of curls on the top of her head tied up wiith a diadem, and the rest of the hair is tied in several little braids. Complex hairstyles are frequent in aristocrat's female portrait during Flavian period.
