On the obverse appears the Pope Boncompagni emblem, Gregorio XIII, adorned with cord and bow, surmounted by the crossed keys and tiara. The legend indicates GREGORIO.XIII.PONT.MAX.ANNO.VIII.
On the reverse, together to the enrollment BONONIA PRAECLARA STVDIORVM ALVMNA, is engraved the figure of the city protector, San Petronio, sitting, holding the miter and pastoral staff in his left hand, while with his right hand holds up the model of the city of Bologna; at his side is placed the emblem of the city. The type of San Petronio was very used both on coinage both in the medalism production of Bologna, starting from the emissions of the Republic between 1376 and 1401, where he appeared for the first time without the attributes that later identify him, but accompanied the explanatory legend.
