The Museum

The Morandi Museum is part of the Settore Musei Civici Bologna and belongs to the Area Moderna e Contemporanea.

The establishment of the museum

The Morandi Museum is the largest and most relevant public collection dedicated to Giorgio Morandi and was established following a substantial donation by the artist's sister Maria Teresa Morandi, combined with an important group of works already in the collection of the Galleria d'Arte Moderna of Bologna.
It now includes 250 works (62 paintings, 18 watercolors, 92 drawings and 78 etchings) and constitutes a unique opportunity to get to know the author's artistic journey, declined in all techniques and illustrated in all its poetic moments and nuances.
From the date of its inauguration (October 4, 1993), the museum was located inside Palazzo d'Accursio, in Piazza Maggiore, until October 27, 2012, the date of its transfer to MAMbo following the earthquake events of the same year.

The transfer to the Ex Forno del Pane

Since November 18, 2012, the museum has reopened to the public in the Ex Forno del Pane location, which also houses the collection of MAMbo - Museo d'Arte Moderna di Bologna.
The new exhibition project analyzes the themes and seasons that characterized the master's activity.

Since the museum's birt, the considerable corpus of works has gradually been joined by others from private collections, thus almost unknown, generously granted on free temporary loan and this has allowed and still allows for a richer and more comprehensive tour for visitors.

Casa Morandi, at 36 Via Fondazza in Bologna, is the home-studio where the Bolognese master lived and worked from 1933 to 1964 (before then the family resided at 38 Via Fondazza).

Giorgio Morandi's House

The original home where the Bolognese master lived and worked was opened to the public on 17 October 2009.
In Via Fondazza 36, the vases, bottles, shells and studio models have found their place in the atelier and storeroom, as they were in the days when the artist lived.
Alongside the furniture, family furnishings and part of the collection of ancient artworks that belonged to Morandi, there are documents, letters, photographs and books generously bequeathed to the Municipality of Bologna by Carlo Zucchini, Guarantor of the Morandi Donation.

The Renovation

The renovation project of the house, entrusted to architect Massimo Iosa Ghini, was realised thanks to the will of the Municipality of Bologna and the fundamental support of Unindustria Bologna.
The layout, the library and the multipurpose room
In the atelier, an interesting itinerary - built through a careful selection of photographs, books and documents of various kinds - recounts the main moments in the Maestro's life, his relations with his family, his artistic training, and his encounters with personalities from the world of cinema and art.
A library with more than 600 volumes - which can be consulted upon reservation - and a multi-purpose hall dedicated to meetings, exhibitions, seminars and cultural activities contribute to deepening and updating the figure and work of the great Bolognese artist.
