The Museum
The Museo del Patrimonio Industriale (Museum of Industrial Heritage), located in a brick kiln from the late 1800s, studies, documents, and underlines the value of the economic and production history of Bologna and the surrounding region from the 15th to the 21st century. The exhibition Macchine Scuola Industria held in the Sala Borsa in 1980, presenting the collections (models, devices, machines, archive images and documents) originating from the Aldini Valeriani schools, was the starting point for the museum’s cultural project. Between 1982 and 1997, the museum-laboratory within the Istituto Tecnico Aldini Valeriani was enriched by replicas and functioning models that illustrate the city’s ancient silk factory, while in 1994 the exhibition Fare macchine automatiche staged in the new site at Fornace Galotti signaled the start of the museum’s commitment to create a network of relationships with the modern industrial district.
In 2000, with Prodotto a Bologna, the exhibition space was reorganized into its current configuration. Excellence and innovation are the guiding themes for the exhibition, which analyzes the production processes, regional contexts, and products with which Bologna was and remains competitive in international markets. In this narrative the theme of education as a strategic element of every process of upgrading, renewing, and developing the region’s economy assumes particular importance.
The museum hosts machines, shop equipment, scientific instruments, replicas, functioning models, and exhibits in the context of a narrative using staged scenes, interactive stations, projections, and multivisions.
An integral part of the museum is the Library and Archive, from the beginning considered a constant point of reference for research and design of the exhibit layout. Subjects for in-depth study: technical instruction, industrial history, production processes, technologies, products, industrial heritage, Italian and foreign museographic experiences.
The museum is part of the Settore Musei Civici Bologna of the Comune di Bologna and is the cornerstone of the Industrial Heritage and Technical Culture area. Since 1997 it has been supported by the Associazione Amici del Museo del Patrimonio Industriale [Friends of the Industrial Heritage Museum] which brings together the area’s most important industries and professional associations with the objective of promoting the culture of innovation.
